Marcus Miller Z3-4 Sparkle Black

I bought this after trying my brother in law's Sire bass. I wanted something in a Music Man shape though and so went for the Z3-4.

It's really comfortable to play, especially with the rolled edges on the neck. It feels quite luxurious. It's nice and versatile too, working well for slap (as you'd expect with Marcus Miller's name on it) as well as pick and fingerstyle.

The sound is nice and raspy, kind of aggressive. That's what I wanted rather than a flatwound sort of 70s sound. My bass style is rooted in '80s goth, punk and indie. Nice and hard-hitting.

The look is the interesting thing In the pictures it looks more black than sparkly, but this is way more sparkly than you'd think. It's a little audacious and definitely surprised me but I immediately liked it. It's very unique.

I recently purchased the Sire Marcus Miller Z3 4-string from Thomann, and while I ultimately had to return it, I wanted to leave a review to highlight my experience.

First off, the bass itself is absolutely top-notch. The build quality, finish, and overall playability were fantastic straight out of the box. The tone is incredibly versatile thanks to the active electronics and the dual pickups—great for everything from clean funk to aggressive rock. It felt solid in the hands and had a growly, punchy tone I was really excited about using in my band project.

However, after trying it out for a few days, I realized I actually needed the 5-string version to suit the tuning and range required in my current band. Thomann made the return process easy and stress-free, which I really appreciate.

If you’re looking for a high-quality 4-string bass with excellent features for the price, I’d absolutely recommend the Z3. I’m now in the process of ordering the 5-string version instead—can’t wait to get it in my hands!

Nachdem ich schon seit längeren diesen Bass bei Thomann erwartet habe, sich aber die Lieferzeit immer wieder verschoben hat, habe ich sofort zugeschlagen, als dieser als lieferbar ausgeschrieben war!
2 Tage später war er (Thomann-typisch) auch schon da!
Out of the Box war ich erstmal ernüchtert, weil sich die Farbe Sparkle Black als Silber mit schwarzem Hintergrund entpuppte! Etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig, aber mein Umfeld meinte: "cooler 70er-Jahre-Style".
Dann der erste Hand-und Augencheck über die Oberflächen: eine erstklassige Verarbeitung was den Lack, den Hals, die Hardware und die Bundstäbe anbelangt! Keine Schraube sitzt schief und alles läuft geschmeidig und exakt! Der Hals ist etwas fleischig und der Body hat auch Speck um die Hüften, aber alles auch gut zu greifen und anschmiegsam.
Dann der Check am Fender Amp mit 12" Markbass Box. In Neutralstellung ist ein grundsolider Stingray-Sound da - wow! Etwas an der aktiven 3-Band-Elektronik der soliden Knöpfe gedreht, muss man aufpassen: die Bassfrequenz ist sofort am Wummern oder ist in der anderen Richtung ziemlich schnell weg. Die Mitten sind nicht so empfindlich und bei der Höhenjustierung kann man eigentlich nichts falsch machen. Wenn man den Bassregler heraus zieht, dann kann man im passiven Modus spielen. Hier lässt sich aber der Ton nicht regulieren. Wobei dies nebensächlich ist, da sich dann der Gesamtsound wieder sehr ausgewogen neutral verhält, ohne wesentlich an Lautstärke zu verlieren. Gut als Notbetrieb, wenn die beiden 9-Volt-Blöcke schlapp machen.
Im Proberaum gestern wurde der Bass natürlich von den Kollegen erstmal ganz genau unter die Lupe genommen und für fantastisch im Sound und Aussehen erklärt!
Für mich war wichtig, dass er mit seinen 4 kg nicht zu schwer ist und gut am Gurt hängt. Beides passt für mich.
Zusammenfassend: der Sound ist durchsetzungsfähig und sehr nahe am Original. Er lässt sich auch 2 Stunden ermüdungsfrei spielen und ist super verarbeitet!
Ein Schildchen am Bass hat auch verraten, dass die Leute von Thomann vorher den Bass gecheckt (und perfekt eingestellt?) haben.
Also Leute: kauft! Der Preis ist unschlagbar für das gesamte Paket! Und vergesst die Sterling Bässe!

J'ai pu essayer la Z7 que j'ai renvoyée pour plusieurs raisons et notamment son poids très conséquent. (proche des 5 kg) et l'emplacement du micro manche qui ne me convenait pas.
Reçu la Z3 aujourd'hui et j'avais cette appréhension du poids à cause du corps en acajou réputé pour être lourd.
Très bonne surprise, la basse pèse moins de 4kg !
Pour le son c'est vraiment ce à quoi je m'attendais et il est vraiment excellent malgré le fait que ce modèle soit équipé d'un micro "standard" alors que la Z7 est elle montée en micros "Premium".
L'EQ 3 bandes est largement suffisant pour sculpter votre son en mode actif et le son en mode passif est très bon aussi même si l'EQ est totalement inopérant dans ce mode.
Très content de mon achat.
